Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology, Basic Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.90% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.86%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 2.81%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 2.06% or 0.85 points to trade at 42.13 at the close. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) added 1.46% or 4.62 points to end at 320.16 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 1.19% or 1.13 points to 96.21 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which lost 6.03% or 26.07 points to trade at 406.35 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 3.50% or 0.78 points to end at 21.52 and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) shed 3.28% or 6.33 points to 186.40.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Paycom Soft (NYSE:PAYC) which rose 21.41% to 209.13, Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) which was up 15.16% to settle at 154.78 and International Paper (NYSE:IP) which gained 13.30% to close at 55.55.
The worst performers were Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc (NYSE:HII) which was down 26.16% to 184.96 in late trade, Estee Lauder Companies Inc (NYSE:EL) which lost 20.90% to settle at 68.94 and Aptiv PLC (NYSE:APTV) which was down 17.72% to 56.83 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Starbox Group Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:STBX) which rose 1,115.90% to 1.56, Root Inc (NASDAQ:ROOT) which was up 68.91% to settle at 68.39 and Plby Group Inc (NASDAQ:PLBY) which gained 41.24% to close at 1.17.
The worst performers were MDJM Ltd (NASDAQ:MDJH) which was down 59.37% to 0.25 in late trade, Equillium Inc (NASDAQ:EQ) which lost 37.61% to settle at 0.86 and Elevai Labs Inc (NASDAQ:ELAB) which was down 36.49% to 0.06 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1976 to 828 and 77 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2488 fell and 819 advanced, while 94 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 13.81% to 23.16 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.58% or 44.15 to $2,756.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 2.65% or 1.82 to hit $70.43 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 2.54% or 1.83 to trade at $73.99 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.25% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.89% to 152.04.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.05% at 103.81.
