Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.87%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.94%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which rose 1.14% or 1.09 points to trade at 96.73 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 0.96% or 1.21 points to end at 126.76 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was up 0.32% or 0.16 points to 49.42 in late trade.
Biggest losers included DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP), which lost 1.94% or 1.03 points to trade at 52.18 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 1.89% or 3.30 points to end at 170.94 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 1.81% or 3.55 points to 193.07.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Hanesbrands Inc (NYSE:HBI) which rose 20.17% to 18.71, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which was up 11.35% to settle at 585.78 and SunTrust Banks Inc (NYSE:STI) which gained 10.18% to close at 64.72.
The worst performers were Tapestry Inc (NYSE:TPR) which was down 14.83% to 33.48 in late trade, Alliance Data Systems Corp (NYSE:ADS) which lost 9.83% to settle at 162.19 and Snap-On Inc (NYSE:SNA) which was down 8.38% to 151.72 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were 3Pea International Inc (NASDAQ:TPNL) which rose 41.26% to 6.9500, OHR Pharmaceutical Inc (NASDAQ:OHRP) which was up 33.17% to settle at 2.770 and Cellect Biotechnology Ltd (NASDAQ:APOP) which gained 33.14% to close at 2.29.
The worst performers were Solid Biosciences LLC (NASDAQ:SLDB) which was down 67.82% to 7.19 in late trade, USA Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:USAT) which lost 50.58% to settle at 3.400 and Yangtze River Port and Logistics Ltd (NASDAQ:YRIV) which was down 39.18% to 1.04 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2065 to 957 and 103 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1730 fell and 882 advanced, while 92 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.44% to 16.37.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.05% or 0.65 to $1313.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 2.63% or 1.42 to hit $52.59 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 1.67% or 1.05 to trade at $61.64 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.17% to 1.1341, while USD/JPY fell 0.11% to 109.83.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.20% at 96.345.
