Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.75%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.76%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.98%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 2.26% or 3.36 points to trade at 152.35 at the close. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 1.76% or 1.41 points to end at 81.70 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 1.68% or 1.84 points to 111.53 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH), which lost 8.36% or 50.63 points to trade at 554.77 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 3.33% or 0.78 points to end at 22.66 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 2.66% or 4.03 points to 147.75.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) which rose 15.78% to 10.42, Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was up 6.63% to settle at 21.55 and Charles Schwab Corp (NYSE:SCHW) which gained 6.12% to close at 71.97.
The worst performers were KLA Corporation (NASDAQ:KLAC) which was down 14.70% to 707.72 in late trade, Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) which lost 10.90% to settle at 76.36 and Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT) which was down 10.69% to 191.02 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Bright Minds Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:DRUG) which rose 1,445.78% to 38.49, NewGenIvf Group Ltd (NASDAQ:NIVF) which was up 159.77% to settle at 1.96 and Zapata Computing Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:ZPTA) which gained 59.74% to close at 0.12.
The worst performers were Seelos Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:SEEL) which was down 47.76% to 1.28 in late trade, Rani Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:RANI) which lost 33.33% to settle at 2.12 and Notable Labs Ltd (NASDAQ:NTBL) which was down 32.75% to 0.27 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1469 to 1350 and 80 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1653 rose and 1618 declined, while 130 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.77% to 20.64.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.46% or 12.20 to $2,677.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 3.87% or 2.86 to hit $70.97 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 3.67% or 2.84 to trade at $74.62 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.21% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.34% to 149.24.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.03% at 103.06.
