Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Financials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.75%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.85%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.96%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 1.71% or 0.53 points to trade at 31.58 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 1.70% or 3.49 points to end at 208.32 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was up 0.92% or 2.35 points to 258.38 in late trade.
Biggest losers included The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which lost 2.48% or 4.17 points to trade at 163.94 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 2.44% or 6.33 points to end at 252.89 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) shed 1.69% or 1.43 points to 83.25.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which rose 16.05% to 401.77, AT&T Inc (NYSE:T) which was up 6.56% to settle at 15.26 and DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc (NYSE:DVA) which gained 3.66% to close at 81.62.
The worst performers were Genuine Parts Co (NYSE:GPC) which was down 12.51% to 130.12 in late trade, Zions Bancorporation (NASDAQ:ZION) which lost 9.67% to settle at 32.24 and Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 9.30% to 220.11 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were SeaStar Medical Holding Corp (NASDAQ:ICU) which rose 54.35% to 1.19, MMTEC Inc (NASDAQ:MTC) which was up 51.47% to settle at 2.06 and OUTLOOK THERAPEUTICS INC (NASDAQ:OTLK) which gained 39.92% to close at 0.66.
The worst performers were Generation Bio Co (NASDAQ:GBIO) which was down 50.21% to 1.20 in late trade, EUDA Health Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:EUDA) which lost 43.31% to settle at 0.80 and NXU Inc (NASDAQ:NXU) which was down 35.65% to 0.04 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2288 to 621 and 78 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2606 fell and 822 advanced, while 144 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 11.34% to 21.40 a new 6-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.89% or 17.55 to $1,985.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 2.49% or 2.17 to hit $89.44 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 2.10% or 1.92 to trade at $93.42 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.44% to 1.06, while USD/JPY fell 0.06% to 149.82.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.29% at 106.04.
