Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.54%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.58%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.64%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM), which rose 2.68% or 6.98 points to trade at 267.83 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 0.52% or 1.02 points to end at 195.36 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 0.52% or 0.84 points to 161.76 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 2.05% or 4.53 points to trade at 216.50 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 1.71% or 2.91 points to end at 166.93 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 1.65% or 3.55 points to 211.21.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which rose 14.70% to 9.440, NetApp Inc (NASDAQ:NTAP) which was up 4.57% to settle at 86.03 and Microchip Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MCHP) which gained 2.96% to close at 155.93.
The worst performers were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which was down 12.04% to 93.52 in late trade, Autodesk Inc (NASDAQ:ADSK) which lost 9.40% to settle at 310.10 and Nordstrom Inc (NYSE:JWN) which was down 8.48% to 28.50 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Glory Star New Media Group Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:GSMG) which rose 50.32% to 2.330, Support.com Inc (NASDAQ:SPRT) which was up 40.76% to settle at 19.650 and SGOCO Group Ltd (NASDAQ:SGOC) which gained 26.80% to close at 8.115.
The worst performers were Regencell Bioscience Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:RGC) which was down 32.92% to 31.08 in late trade, Aditx Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ADTX) which lost 30.76% to settle at 2.105 and D-MARKET Electronic Services & Trading ADR (NASDAQ:HEPS) which was down 25.42% to 8.96 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2385 to 827 and 132 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2266 fell and 1246 advanced, while 132 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 12.21% to 18.84.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.15% or 2.60 to $1793.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.80% or 0.55 to hit $67.81 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 1.04% or 0.74 to trade at $70.54 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.14% to 1.1753, while USD/JPY rose 0.05% to 110.04.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.25% at 93.067.
