Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Industrials, Technology and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.48%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.45%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.72%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 1.86% or 1.88 points to trade at 103.06 at the close. Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) added 0.79% or 0.66 points to end at 84.13 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) was up 0.64% or 0.85 points to 134.37 in late trade.
Biggest losers included United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), which lost 1.69% or 2.03 points to trade at 118.25 in late trade. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 1.65% or 2.81 points to end at 167.29 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 1.62% or 2.22 points to 135.07.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which rose 12.47% to 16.60, Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which was up 10.56% to settle at 19.43 and Perrigo Co (NYSE:PRGO) which gained 8.99% to close at 88.50.
The worst performers were Transdigm Group Incorporated (NYSE:TDG) which was down 7.11% to 264.70 in late trade, Johnson Controls International PLC (NYSE:JCI) which lost 6.35% to settle at 38.40 and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which was down 5.12% to 11.110 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were China Recycling Energy Corp (NASDAQ:CREG) which rose 198.43% to 3.7900, root9B Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:RTNB) which was up 172.98% to settle at 1.4741 and Otonomy Inc (NASDAQ:OTIC) which gained 91.07% to close at 5.35.
The worst performers were Sequential (NASDAQ:SQBG) which was down 36.29% to 1.51 in late trade, Kingtone Wirelessinfo Solution (NASDAQ:KONE) which lost 35.82% to settle at 3.588 and Meet Group Inc (NASDAQ:MEET) which was down 31.88% to 2.350 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1975 to 1142 and 46 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1514 fell and 997 advanced, while 105 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 12.47% to 11.00 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.27% or 3.46 to $1287.16 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.49% or 0.28 to hit $57.09 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.55% or 0.35 to trade at $63.84 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.44% to 1.1646, while USD/JPY fell 0.55% to 113.25.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.42% at 94.37.
