Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.27%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.41%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.62%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 2.87% or 7.69 points to trade at 276.03 at the close. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) added 2.04% or 4.94 points to end at 246.60 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 1.58% or 1.30 points to 83.47 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which lost 3.52% or 2.10 points to trade at 57.55 in late trade. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) declined 3.39% or 3.24 points to end at 92.25 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 2.42% or 5.07 points to 204.84.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were NiSource Inc (NYSE:NI) which rose 5.31% to 23.02, ABIOMED Inc (NASDAQ:ABMD) which was up 3.65% to settle at 329.93 and Akamai Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:AKAM) which gained 3.53% to close at 106.48.
The worst performers were Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) which was down 7.44% to 32.16 in late trade, Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which lost 6.85% to settle at 22.58 and Citigroup Inc (NYSE:C) which was down 6.26% to 64.69 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ObsEva SA (NASDAQ:OBSV) which rose 67.46% to 4.22, Ceragon Networks Ltd (NASDAQ:CRNT) which was up 55.56% to settle at 4.900 and DBV Technologies (NASDAQ:DBVT) which gained 53.48% to close at 5.74.
The worst performers were Cardiff Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:CRDF) which was down 28.56% to 13.980 in late trade, Dogness International Corp Class A (NASDAQ:DOGZ) which lost 24.30% to settle at 2.040 and Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:CYCC) which was down 17.87% to 7.4000 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2026 to 1077 and 72 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2047 fell and 1014 advanced, while 63 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.29% to 23.55.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 1.36% or 25.10 to $1826.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 2.50% or 1.34 to hit $52.23 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 2.59% or 1.46 to trade at $54.96 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.63% to 1.2080, while USD/JPY rose 0.06% to 103.86.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.59% at 90.743.
