Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.04%, while the S&P 500 index added 1.68%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 2.40%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 5.73% or 1.11 points to trade at 20.47 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 5.16% or 3.85 points to end at 78.49 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 2.82% or 4.63 points to 168.76 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which lost 0.94% or 1.51 points to trade at 158.39 in late trade. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) declined 0.83% or 0.57 points to end at 68.13 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 0.61% or 0.88 points to 144.15.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX) which rose 24.50% to 95.91, VF Corporation (NYSE:VFC) which was up 7.41% to settle at 17.80 and Estee Lauder Companies Inc (NYSE:EL) which gained 6.64% to close at 91.93.
The worst performers were Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which was down 7.50% to 51.68 in late trade, Baxter International Inc (NYSE:BAX) which lost 6.53% to settle at 34.51 and Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which was down 3.87% to 119.72 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Earlyworks Co Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:ELWS) which rose 175.00% to 4.40, Vicinity Motor Corp (NASDAQ:VEV) which was up 110.06% to settle at 0.21 and CXApp Inc (NASDAQ:CXAI) which gained 83.69% to close at 2.70.
The worst performers were E-Home Household Service Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:EJH) which was down 88.55% to 0.15 in late trade, Syros Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SYRS) which lost 61.68% to settle at 1.92 and Ascent Solar Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:ASTI) which was down 42.75% to 0.05 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2242 to 626 and 54 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2340 rose and 991 declined, while 129 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 12.51% to 18.12.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.13% or 3.15 to $2,507.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.79% or 1.43 to hit $78.63 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 1.69% or 1.39 to trade at $80.91 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.60% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.26% to 146.81.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.54% at 102.41.
