Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Utilities and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.56% to hit a new 3-month high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.88%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 1.67%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 2.39% or 2.51 points to trade at 107.70 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 2.19% or 1.17 points to end at 54.71 and Visa Inc (NYSE:V) was up 1.75% or 1.30 points to 75.38 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 1.14% or 1.89 points to trade at 164.39 in late trade. EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) declined 0.84% or 0.54 points to end at 63.64 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) shed 0.64% or 0.38 points to 59.03.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which rose 6.52% to 8.00, TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which was up 4.91% to settle at 65.58 and Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which gained 4.86% to close at 26.95.
The worst performers were Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc (NYSE:DO) which was down 5.04% to 21.46 in late trade, Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which lost 4.62% to settle at 8.88 and Ensco PLC (NYSE:ESV) which was down 3.92% to 10.30 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Quantum Fuel Systems Inc (NASDAQ:QTWW) which rose 174.74% to 0.2610, Zhone Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:ZHNE) which was up 25.62% to settle at 1.520 and Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) which gained 22.66% to close at 0.1900.
The worst performers were Gevo Inc (NASDAQ:GEVO) which was down 39.11% to 0.2801 in late trade, Alexza Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ALXA) which lost 28.29% to settle at 0.5020 and Conns Inc (NASDAQ:CONN) which was down 24.54% to 11.81 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2635 to 722 and 29 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1907 rose and 704 declined, while 44 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 9.06% to 13.86.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 1.83% or 22.40 to $1244.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 2.64% or 1.04 to hit $38.35 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 2.25% or 0.92 to trade at $39.95 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.86% to 1.1293, while USD/JPY fell 0.64% to 112.72.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.85% at 95.17.
