U.S. shares higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.47%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.47%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.15%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.27%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 1.77% or 5.87 points to trade at 337.63 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 1.66% or 1.09 points to end at 66.80 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 1.42% or 0.72 points to 51.55 in late trade.

Biggest losers included General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which lost 3.06% or 0.43 points to trade at 13.64 in late trade. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 1.28% or 0.62 points to end at 47.69 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 0.73% or 1.15 points to 156.20.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Dover Corporation (NYSE:DOV) which rose 4.01% to 103.91, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was up 3.56% to settle at 249.58 and Adobe Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:ADBE) which gained 3.41% to close at 229.75.

The worst performers were Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) which was down 9.43% to 47.05 in late trade, Cardinal Health Inc (NYSE:CAH) which lost 6.54% to settle at 65.41 and Discovery Communications C Inc (NASDAQ:DISCK) which was down 4.38% to 20.31 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Precipio Inc (NASDAQ:PRPO) which rose 88.82% to 0.9001, Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ARNA) which was up 28.68% to settle at 39.750 and Casi Pharma (NASDAQ:CASI) which gained 21.81% to close at 3.9100.

The worst performers were VivoPower International PLC (NASDAQ:VVPR) which was down 30.65% to 1.72 in late trade, Proteostasis Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PTI) which lost 26.18% to settle at 5.16 and NF Energy Saving Corporation (NASDAQ:NFEC) which was down 18.56% to 1.5800 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1723 to 1366 and 108 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1435 fell and 1060 advanced, while 164 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.73% to 18.31.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.59% or 7.80 to $1310.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 2.29% or 1.42 to hit $63.55 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 2.01% or 1.33 to trade at $67.38 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.75% to 1.2243, while USD/JPY rose 0.41% to 106.54.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.60% at 90.01.
