Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.20% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.25%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.57%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 3.98% or 14.76 points to trade at 385.93 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 2.71% or 1.41 points to end at 53.45 and Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) was up 2.37% or 6.27 points to 270.48 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V), which lost 5.44% or 15.70 points to trade at 272.93 in late trade. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) declined 1.40% or 4.69 points to end at 330.92 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 1.00% or 4.34 points to 429.17.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which rose 7.93% to 48.72, Estee Lauder Companies Inc (NYSE:EL) which was up 6.09% to settle at 91.98 and Las Vegas Sands Corp (NYSE:LVS) which gained 5.34% to close at 44.38.
The worst performers were Global Payments Inc (NYSE:GPN) which was down 6.46% to 103.81 in late trade, Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) which lost 5.44% to settle at 272.93 and McKesson Corporation (NYSE:MCK) which was down 4.85% to 480.49 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Onconetix Inc (NASDAQ:ONCO) which rose 5,112.40% to 3.87, Beasley Broadcast Group Inc (NASDAQ:BBGI) which was up 2,031.58% to settle at 10.13 and Maison Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:MSS) which gained 115.86% to close at 1.59.
The worst performers were Biovie Inc (NASDAQ:BIVI) which was down 57.86% to 1.18 in late trade, Focus Universal Inc (NASDAQ:FCUV) which lost 28.97% to settle at 0.23 and Expion360 Inc (NASDAQ:XPON) which was down 24.44% to 0.09 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1694 to 1090 and 104 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1713 rose and 1550 declined, while 136 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.15% to 15.39.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.21% or 32.05 to $2,684.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 1.68% or 1.18 to hit $71.55 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 1.72% or 1.26 to trade at $74.47 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.60% to 1.12, while USD/JPY fell 0.30% to 143.17.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.51% at 100.05.
