Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Healthcare, Utilities and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.23%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.41%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.63%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which rose 4.60% or 3.29 points to trade at 74.81 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 1.82% or 2.37 points to end at 132.65 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 1.30% or 0.42 points to 32.50 in late trade.
Biggest losers included McDonald`s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which lost 2.33% or 2.30 points to trade at 96.44 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 2.06% or 2.45 points to end at 116.24 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) shed 2.03% or 2.31 points to 111.39.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which rose 4.80% to 21.82, EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) which was up 4.60% to settle at 74.81 and Joy Global Inc (NYSE:JOY) which gained 3.63% to close at 42.02.
The worst performers were Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT) which was down 8.39% to 19.97 in late trade, Mylan Inc (NASDAQ:MYL) which lost 5.71% to settle at 71.72 and Mallinckrodt (NYSE:MNK) which was down 5.46% to 115.35 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Synthesis Energy Systems Inc (NASDAQ:SYMX) which rose 70.37% to 1.840, Globus Maritime Limited (NASDAQ:GLBS) which was up 33.80% to settle at 1.90 and KBS Fashion Group Ltd (NASDAQ:KBSF) which lost 29.38% to close at 7.91.
The worst performers were Celladon Corp (NASDAQ:CLDN) which was down 80.92% to 2.61 in late trade, Akorn Inc (NASDAQ:AKRX) which lost 21.98% to settle at 43.10 and Motricity (NASDAQ:VLTC) which was down 20.02% to 9.230 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2041 to 1092 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1998 fell and 798 advanced, while 6 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.43% to 13.08.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 2.29% or 26.90 to $1201.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.78% or 0.45 to hit $56.70 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.94% or 0.61 to trade at $64.67 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.10% to 1.0885, while USD/JPY rose 0.08% to 119.08.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.18% at 96.89.
