Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Healthcare, Oil & Gas and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.02%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.11%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.03%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (O:INTC), which rose 3.44% or 1.14 points to trade at 34.30 at the close. Coca-Cola Company (N:KO) added 1.96% or 0.83 points to end at 43.11 and Apple Inc (O:AAPL) was up 1.27% or 1.49 points to 118.78 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (N:UNH), which lost 5.70% or 6.68 points to trade at 110.57 in late trade. Pfizer Inc (N:PFE) declined 3.06% or 1.02 points to end at 32.29 and Chevron Corporation (N:CVX) shed 1.50% or 1.38 points to 90.83.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Keurig Green Mountain Inc (O:GMCR) which rose 18.22% to 47.88, JM Smucker Company (N:SJM) which was up 6.97% to settle at 121.28 and Norfolk Southern Corporation (N:NSC) which gained 4.71% to close at 96.85.
The worst performers were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (N:CHK) which was down 10.00% to 5.40 in late trade, Tenet Healthcare Corporation (N:THC) which lost 7.90% to settle at 30.44 and Southwestern Energy Company (N:SWN) which was down 7.21% to 9.78 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were KaloBios Pharmaceuticals Inc (O:KBIO) which rose 397.58% to 10.300, Arcadia Biosciences Inc (O:RKDA) which was up 37.50% to settle at 3.96 and Netlist Inc (O:NLST) which gained 28.02% to close at 0.845.
The worst performers were Sfx Enterta (O:SFXE) which was down 40.86% to 0.24 in late trade, The Bon-Ton Stores Inc (O:BONT) which lost 38.89% to settle at 1.21 and Kirklands Inc (O:KIRK) which was down 32.91% to 13.60 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1796 to 1647 and 6 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1479 fell and 1126 advanced, while 70 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.31% to 17.07.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 1.20% or 12.80 to $1081.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.30% or 0.12 to hit $41.83 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.14% or 0.06 to trade at $44.20 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.68% to 1.0733, while USD/JPY fell 0.61% to 122.89.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.59% at 99.07.
