Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Financials, Utilities and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.26%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.29%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.23%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which rose 1.75% or 1.11 points to trade at 64.72 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 1.30% or 0.78 points to end at 60.64 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was up 1.20% or 1.36 points to 114.56 in late trade.
Biggest losers included McDonald`s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which lost 1.71% or 1.67 points to trade at 96.13 in late trade. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) declined 0.85% or 0.41 points to end at 48.24 and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) shed 0.66% or 0.72 points to 108.32.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cognizant Technology Solutions (NASDAQ:CTSH) which rose 6.15% to 62.78, Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which was up 3.97% to settle at 117.18 and Tenet Healthcare Corporation (NYSE:THC) which gained 3.80% to close at 49.49.
The worst performers were Keurig Green Mountain Inc (NASDAQ:GMCR) which was down 3.97% to 111.61 in late trade, Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) which lost 2.40% to settle at 71.60 and CSX Corporation (NYSE:CSX) which was down 2.27% to 36.61 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Intercloud (NASDAQ:ICLD) which rose 53.56% to 4.10, Xg Technolo (NASDAQ:XGTI) which was up 49.72% to settle at 0.539 and PMFG Inc (NASDAQ:PMFG) which gained 38.96% to close at 6.42.
The worst performers were Gyrodyne Company of America Inc (NASDAQ:GYRO) which was down 25.36% to 3.65 in late trade, Applied Genetic (NASDAQ:AGTC) which lost 15.60% to settle at 16.77 and Kelly Services B Inc (NASDAQ:KELYB) which was down 15.43% to 16.060 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1912 to 1225 and 3 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1606 rose and 1180 declined, while 4 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.34% to 12.87.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 1.13% or 13.30 to $1187.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.31% or 0.18 to hit $58.97 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $66.46 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.48% to 1.1145, while USD/JPY unchanged 0.00% to 120.14.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.22% at 95.59.
