Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Industrials and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.39%, while the S&P 500 index gained 1.65%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 2.27%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Company (N:BA), which rose 3.65% or 3.97 points to trade at 112.60 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (N:CAT) added 3.26% or 2.06 points to end at 65.21 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (N:UNH) was up 2.98% or 3.33 points to 115.15 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Wal-Mart Stores Inc (N:WMT), which lost 0.42% or 0.28 points to trade at 65.90 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (N:TRV) declined 0.11% or 0.12 points to end at 107.37 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (N:XOM) gained 0.23% or 0.19 points to 81.22.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were ADT Corporation (N:ADT) which rose 47.53% to 39.64, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (N:CHK) which was up 16.98% to settle at 1.86 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (N:FCX) which gained 15.19% to close at 6.37.
The worst performers were Southwestern Energy Company (N:SWN) which was down 10.41% to 8.00 in late trade, Range Resources Corporation (N:RRC) which lost 5.07% to settle at 26.04 and Newmont Mining Corporation (N:NEM) which was down 4.73% to 24.56 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Atossa Genetics Inc (O:ATOS) which rose 77.42% to 0.5500, Groupon Inc (O:GRPN) which was up 41.18% to settle at 4.08 and Great Basin Scientific Inc (O:GBSN) which gained 38.42% to close at 0.2630.
The worst performers were Eltek Ltd (O:ELTK) which was down 100.00% to 0.000 in late trade, Elbit Imaging Ltd (O:EMITF) which lost 100.00% to settle at 0.0000 and Elmira Savings Bank (O:ESBK) which was down 100.00% to 0.00 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2634 to 735 and 19 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2047 rose and 594 declined, while 41 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.28% to 24.06.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 3.10% or 38.40 to $1201.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 1.09% or 0.32 to hit $29.12 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 3.28% or 1.09 to trade at $32.30 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.17% to 1.1137, while USD/JPY fell 0.54% to 114.00.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.19% at 96.93.
