Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Healthcare, Materials and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 1.14%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canfor Corporation (TSX:CFP), which rose 3.42% or 0.74 points to trade at 22.38 at the close. Brookfield Infrastructure Partners LP (TSX:BIP_u) added 2.78% or 1.33 points to end at 49.14 and TFI International Inc (TSX:TFII) was up 2.72% or 2.73 points to 103.25 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Canopy Growth Corp (TSX:WEED), which lost 18.26% or 0.82 points to trade at 3.67 in late trade. NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX:NG) declined 10.33% or 0.71 points to end at 6.16 and K92 Mining Inc (TSX:KNT) shed 7.61% or 0.64 points to 7.77.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 670 to 352 and 85 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.35% to 22.22.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.53% or 9.65 to $1,807.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 3.52% or 3.86 to hit $105.92 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 2.86% or 3.22 to trade at $109.23 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.18% to 0.78, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.20% to 0.74.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.35% at 104.49.
