Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the IT, Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.64%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Lithium Americas Corp (TSX:LAC), which rose 7.58% or 2.85 points to trade at 40.43 at the close. Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) added 5.43% or 1.44 points to end at 27.95 and Martinrea International Inc . (TSX:MRE) was up 5.09% or 0.40 points to 8.26 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:FR), which lost 6.84% or 1.20 points to trade at 16.35 in late trade. Denison Mines Corp (TSX:DML) declined 6.05% or 0.13 points to end at 2.02 and NuVista Energy Ltd . (TSX:NVA) shed 5.29% or 0.63 points to 11.27.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 530 to 522 and 95 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.37% to 10.07.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.76% or 34.90 to $1,951.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 5.03% or 5.41 to hit $102.20 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 5.17% or 5.85 to trade at $107.31 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 0.79, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.03% to 0.73.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.20% at 100.97.
