Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Technology and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.44% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.45%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.73%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were E I du Pont de Nemours & Co (NYSE:DD), which rose 2.12% or 1.74 points to trade at 83.88 at the close. Visa Inc (NYSE:V) added 1.69% or 1.58 points to end at 95.08 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) was up 1.44% or 0.45 points to 31.70 in late trade.
Biggest losers included General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which lost 1.69% or 0.49 points to trade at 28.45 in late trade. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 1.55% or 0.73 points to end at 46.46 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 1.02% or 0.65 points to 63.27.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Frontier Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:FTR) which rose 9.31% to 1.35, Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which was up 5.07% to settle at 6.43 and Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which gained 4.35% to close at 5.280.
The worst performers were Mylan Inc (NASDAQ:MYL) which was down 2.85% to 37.77 in late trade, Twenty-First Century Fox Inc A (NASDAQ:FOXA) which lost 2.37% to settle at 28.06 and Yahoo! Inc (NASDAQ:YHOO) which was down 2.10% to 52.01 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were MoSys Inc (NASDAQ:MOSY) which rose 32.21% to 1.9700, Aptose Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:APTO) which was up 21.88% to settle at 1.560 and Anthera Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ANTH) which gained 20.37% to close at 1.950.
The worst performers were GTX Inc (NASDAQ:GTXI) which was down 21.63% to 4.8200 in late trade, Sears Canada Inc (NASDAQ:SRSC) which lost 19.77% to settle at 0.690 and pSivida Corp (NASDAQ:PSDV) which was down 15.87% to 1.750 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2226 to 1002 and 21 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1601 rose and 927 declined, while 111 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 8.64% to 10.47.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.02% or 0.31 to $1268.59 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.87% or 0.40 to hit $46.48 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.91% or 0.44 to trade at $48.73 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1207, while USD/JPY rose 0.09% to 110.05.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.17% at 96.98.
