Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Industrials and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.20%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.13%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.17%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which rose 0.93% or 0.66 points to trade at 71.44 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 0.92% or 0.31 points to end at 34.02 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) was up 0.41% or 0.14 points to 34.44 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 2.17% or 1.91 points to trade at 86.01 in late trade. McDonald`s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 1.36% or 1.33 points to end at 96.48 and Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) shed 0.47% or 0.67 points to 142.33.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which rose 5.15% to 99.23, GameStop Corp (NYSE:GME) which was up 3.67% to settle at 40.92 and Johnson Controls Inc (NYSE:JCI) which gained 2.99% to close at 53.00.
The worst performers were United Rentals Inc (NYSE:URI) which was down 9.14% to 94.95 in late trade, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which lost 4.81% to settle at 14.05 and Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which was down 3.68% to 25.68 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were One Horizon (NASDAQ:OHGI) which rose 112.87% to 4.30, Vestin Realty Mortgage II Inc (NASDAQ:VRTB) which was up 32.69% to settle at 4.790 and CounterPath Corporation (NASDAQ:CPAH) which gained 30.00% to close at 0.715.
The worst performers were Neostem Inc (NASDAQ:NBS) which was down 21.67% to 2.060 in late trade, Imris Inc (NASDAQ:IMRS) which lost 19.35% to settle at 0.050 and Ceres Inc (NASDAQ:CERE) which was down 17.06% to 2.430 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1783 to 1345 and 5 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1466 fell and 1313 advanced, while 5 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.45% to 13.33.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.20% or 2.40 to $1188.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.76% or 0.43 to hit $57.95 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 1.34% or 0.83 to trade at $62.89 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.40% to 1.0947, while USD/JPY rose 0.28% to 123.98.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.22% at 97.12.
