Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.21%, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.37%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 2.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which rose 3.05% or 4.91 points to trade at 165.67 at the close. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 1.84% or 2.91 points to end at 160.76 and Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) was up 1.82% or 1.22 points to 67.96 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 6.45% or 12.29 points to trade at 178.31 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 5.30% or 1.63 points to end at 29.11 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 4.89% or 7.85 points to 152.62.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were CH Robinson Worldwide Inc (NASDAQ:CHRW) which rose 14.78% to 102.21, FMC Corporation (NYSE:FMC) which was up 10.25% to settle at 64.34 and Air Products and Chemicals Inc (NYSE:APD) which gained 8.95% to close at 287.47.
The worst performers were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which was down 21.01% to 94.17 in late trade, MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM) which lost 13.22% to settle at 37.29 and Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) which was down 9.87% to 830.33 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Evoke Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:EVOK) which rose 1,114.70% to 4.86, Redhill Biopharma Ltd (NASDAQ:RDHL) which was up 97.87% to settle at 0.76 and Dermata Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:DRMA) which gained 44.19% to close at 2.48.
The worst performers were Vintage Wine Estates Inc (NASDAQ:VWE) which was down 49.52% to 0.03 in late trade, Alx Oncology Holdings (NASDAQ:ALXO) which lost 41.67% to settle at 2.80 and Standard Biotools Inc (NASDAQ:LAB) which was down 36.61% to 1.42 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2035 to 826 and 56 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2660 fell and 715 advanced, while 93 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 13.63% to 18.59 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.56% or 13.80 to $2,486.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.31% or 1.02 to hit $76.89 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.96% or 0.78 to trade at $80.06 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.34% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.28% to 149.56.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.32% at 104.19.
