Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Industrials, Technology and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.96%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.86%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.12%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which rose 0.66% or 0.35 points to trade at 53.75 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 0.54% or 0.66 points to end at 122.72 and Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM) was up 0.43% or 0.29 points to 68.42 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 3.00% or 11.00 points to trade at 355.18 in late trade. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 2.38% or 2.86 points to end at 117.26 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) shed 2.26% or 3.35 points to 144.99.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cimarex Energy Co (NYSE:XEC) which rose 3.68% to 47.66, Edison International (NYSE:EIX) which was up 3.56% to settle at 71.56 and Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) which gained 2.66% to close at 11.96.
The worst performers were Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) which was down 12.30% to 19.54 in late trade, L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which lost 5.12% to settle at 18.16 and Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NKTR) which was down 3.99% to 19.48 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Kodiak Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:KOD) which rose 72.47% to 51.05, Onconova Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ONTX) which was up 56.33% to settle at 0.2939 and Sierra Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:SRRA) which gained 44.22% to close at 0.50.
The worst performers were Aqua Metals Inc (NASDAQ:AQMS) which was down 39.96% to 0.81 in late trade, Akers Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:AKER) which lost 17.03% to settle at 6.389 and Cancer Genetics Inc (NASDAQ:CGIX) which was down 16.91% to 7.320 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2056 to 784 and 85 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1870 fell and 794 advanced, while 69 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 17.40% to 14.91 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.30% or 4.45 to $1468.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 1.50% or 0.83 to hit $56.00 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.10% or 0.06 to trade at $60.89 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1080, while USD/JPY fell 0.00% to 108.97.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.40% at 97.805.
