Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Technology and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.60%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.77%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.03%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 1.27% or 2.63 points to trade at 209.82 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 1.21% or 1.34 points to end at 112.49 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) was up 1.15% or 1.93 points to 170.02 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which lost 5.05% or 16.61 points to trade at 312.50 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 4.47% or 4.02 points to end at 85.95 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 3.63% or 0.72 points to 18.99.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Fortinet Inc (NASDAQ:FTNT) which rose 25.30% to 69.93, Axon Enterprise Inc (NASDAQ:AXON) which was up 18.39% to settle at 349.24 and VF Corporation (NYSE:VFC) which gained 7.06% to close at 17.60.
The worst performers were Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which was down 20.20% to 492.34 in late trade, Airbnb Inc (NASDAQ:ABNB) which lost 13.38% to settle at 113.01 and Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:CRL) which was down 12.60% to 199.96 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Richtech Robotics Inc (NASDAQ:RR) which rose 67.14% to 0.62, G1 Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:GTHX) which was up 66.12% to settle at 7.06 and Greenlane Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:GNLN) which gained 58.20% to close at 4.05.
The worst performers were Expion360 Inc (NASDAQ:XPON) which was down 68.08% to 0.08 in late trade, VBI Vaccines Inc (NASDAQ:VBIV) which lost 51.09% to settle at 0.07 and DZS Inc (NASDAQ:DZSI) which was down 50.00% to 0.52 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1713 to 1129 and 77 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2305 fell and 1051 advanced, while 111 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.51% to 27.85.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.37% or 9.10 to $2,422.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 2.99% or 2.19 to hit $75.39 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 2.59% or 1.98 to trade at $78.46 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.07% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 1.73% to 146.80.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.22% at 102.98.
