Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.47%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.51%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.20%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 1.67% or 1.46 points to trade at 88.77 at the close. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 0.91% or 0.72 points to end at 79.70 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 0.56% or 1.12 points to 201.62 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM), which lost 1.68% or 1.48 points to trade at 86.78 in late trade. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) declined 1.61% or 0.44 points to end at 26.92 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) shed 1.43% or 1.49 points to 102.25.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Joy Global Inc (NYSE:JOY) which rose 5.21% to 44.22, Monster Beverage Corporation (NASDAQ:MNST) which was up 4.31% to settle at 134.00 and News Corp A (NASDAQ:NWSA) which gained 3.76% to close at 15.71.
The worst performers were Noble Energy Inc (NYSE:NBL) which was down 6.21% to 46.07 in late trade, QEP Resources Inc (NYSE:QEP) which lost 5.23% to settle at 20.46 and Pioneer Natural Resources Company (NYSE:PXD) which was down 3.81% to 153.00 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Viggle (NASDAQ:VGGL) which rose 58.65% to 3.76, Myos Corpor (NASDAQ:MYOS) which was up 40.50% to settle at 6.73 and Koss Corporation (NASDAQ:KOSS) which gained 30.43% to close at 3.00.
The worst performers were Interphase Corporation (NASDAQ:INPH) which was down 20.56% to 0.71 in late trade, Sterling Construction Company Inc (NASDAQ:STRL) which lost 19.66% to settle at 3.31 and FreeSeas Inc (NASDAQ:FREE) which was down 17.86% to 0.183 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1794 to 1229 and 3 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1446 rose and 1278 declined, while 1 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.54% to 13.83.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 0.52% or 6.20 to $1182.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.26% or 0.15 to hit $59.23 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.79% or 0.53 to trade at $65.64 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.42% to 1.1154, while USD/JPY rose 0.30% to 120.13.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.22% at 95.12.
