Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Basic Materials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.44%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.17%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.05%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which rose 1.36% or 2.99 points to trade at 222.72 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 0.51% or 1.43 points to end at 280.91 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 0.20% or 0.30 points to 151.25 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 1.70% or 1.90 points to trade at 110.18 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 1.55% or 2.37 points to end at 150.52 and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) shed 1.52% or 2.80 points to 181.96.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were MarketAxess Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MKTX) which rose 7.46% to 273.94, Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which was up 6.15% to settle at 144.03 and Marathon Petroleum Corp (NYSE:MPC) which gained 5.72% to close at 174.84.
The worst performers were Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) which was down 90.04% to 81.11 in late trade, Constellation Brands Inc Class A (NYSE:STZ) which lost 4.70% to settle at 243.65 and Bio-Techne Corp (NASDAQ:TECH) which was down 4.43% to 74.00 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were 36Kr Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:KRKR) which rose 1,638.66% to 4.87, Upexi Inc (NASDAQ:UPXI) which was up 1,585.99% to settle at 3.20 and Evgo Inc (NASDAQ:EVGO) which gained 61.07% to close at 6.33.
The worst performers were Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) which was down 90.04% to 81.11 in late trade, Color Star Technology Co Ltd (NASDAQ:ADD) which lost 57.14% to settle at 0.45 and Cemtrex Inc (NASDAQ:CETX) which was down 51.07% to 2.56 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1851 to 955 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2136 fell and 1140 advanced, while 111 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 8.41% to 20.49.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.26% or 7.05 to $2,676.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 5.25% or 3.68 to hit $73.78 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 5.09% or 3.76 to trade at $77.66 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.16% to 1.10, while USD/JPY rose 0.32% to 146.93.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.30% at 101.73.
