Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Utilities and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.35%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.30%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.24%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 4.50% or 7.06 points to trade at 164.10 at the close. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 1.82% or 5.39 points to end at 302.11 and Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON) was up 1.77% or 3.99 points to 229.08 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 2.72% or 10.87 points to trade at 388.39 in late trade. NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) declined 2.69% or 3.74 points to end at 135.07 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 2.69% or 2.79 points to 101.00.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) which rose 17.74% to 10.42, Alphabet Inc Class A (NASDAQ:GOOGL) which was up 5.59% to settle at 185.17 and Alphabet Inc Class C (NASDAQ:GOOG) which gained 5.32% to close at 186.53.
The worst performers were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which was down 9.07% to 41.51 in late trade, Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which lost 8.20% to settle at 40.54 and Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) which was down 6.67% to 177.74 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were JLong Group Ltd (NASDAQ:JL) which rose 888.63% to 3.13, Chimerix Inc (NASDAQ:CMRX) which was up 219.08% to settle at 2.76 and Uniqure NV (NASDAQ:QURE) which gained 109.73% to close at 15.30.
The worst performers were CervoMed Inc (NASDAQ:CRVO) which was down 78.93% to 2.16 in late trade, Biora Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BIOR) which lost 58.54% to settle at 0.56 and Medirom Healthcare Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:MRM) which was down 42.86% to 1.60 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1767 to 1029 and 87 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1896 fell and 1410 advanced, while 127 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.07% to 14.18.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.25% or 33.55 to $2,719.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.12% or 0.08 to hit $68.45 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.11% or 0.08 to trade at $72.06 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.22% to 1.05, while USD/JPY rose 0.48% to 151.91.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.24% at 106.07.
