Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Utilities, Basic Materials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.22%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.11%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 2.69% or 2.64 points to trade at 100.86 at the close. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) added 1.54% or 3.04 points to end at 199.95 and Travelers Companies (NYSE:TRV) was up 1.54% or 3.24 points to 212.95 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH), which lost 2.24% or 11.23 points to trade at 490.69 in late trade. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) declined 1.89% or 1.27 points to end at 65.88 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 1.73% or 4.51 points to 256.21.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Air Products and Chemicals Inc (NYSE:APD) which rose 3.64% to 279.53, Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) which was up 3.17% to settle at 107.58 and Las Vegas Sands Corp (NYSE:LVS) which gained 3.12% to close at 45.02.
The worst performers were Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which was down 7.22% to 122.75 in late trade, Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which lost 5.04% to settle at 40.36 and Sherwin-Williams Co (NYSE:SHW) which was down 3.98% to 291.95 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Volcon Inc (NASDAQ:VLCN) which rose 7,271.43% to 10.32, STRATA Skin Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:SSKN) which was up 936.54% to settle at 3.12 and CEA Industries Inc (NASDAQ:CEAD) which gained 891.86% to close at 6.70.
The worst performers were Biomea Fusion Inc (NASDAQ:BMEA) which was down 63.27% to 4.14 in late trade, Blue World Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:BWAQ) which lost 28.79% to settle at 7.10 and Seres Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MCRB) which was down 28.03% to 0.61 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2059 to 776 and 99 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2355 fell and 979 advanced, while 141 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.86% to 12.22.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 3.41% or 81.45 to $2,309.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.32% or 0.24 to hit $75.31 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.58% or 0.46 to trade at $79.41 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.79% to 1.08, while USD/JPY rose 0.73% to 156.74.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.81% at 104.90.
