Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Industrials, Consumer Goods and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.40%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.28%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.14%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 2.49% or 1.81 points to trade at 74.58 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 2.31% or 1.21 points to end at 53.55 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 2.18% or 0.94 points to 43.98 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which lost 0.38% or 0.39 points to trade at 103.43 in late trade. Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 0.06% or 0.04 points to end at 64.32 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) gained 0.51% or 0.37 points to 72.86.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Owens-Illinois Inc (NYSE:OI) which rose 6.67% to 21.42, Joy Global Inc (NYSE:JOY) which was up 5.55% to settle at 18.65 and Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which gained 5.20% to close at 15.38.
The worst performers were Host Hotels & Resorts Inc (NYSE:HST) which was down 2.32% to 17.27 in late trade, Keurig Green Mountain Inc (NASDAQ:GMCR) which lost 2.06% to settle at 58.13 and Urban Outfitters Inc (NASDAQ:URBN) which was down 1.69% to 29.69 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Kelly Services B Inc (NASDAQ:KELYB) which rose 32.33% to 18.990, Ossen Innovation Co Ltd (NASDAQ:OSN) which was up 28.21% to settle at 1.000 and EnteroMedics Inc (NASDAQ:ETRM) which gained 22.61% to close at 0.320.
The worst performers were BG Medicine Inc (NASDAQ:BGMD) which was down 40.89% to 0.380 in late trade, XenoPort Inc (NASDAQ:XNPT) which lost 28.08% to settle at 4.84 and SITO Mobile Ltd (NASDAQ:SITO) which was down 20.83% to 4.750 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1916 to 632 and 2 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1763 rose and 777 declined, while 66 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 6.85% to 22.59.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.34% or 3.80 to $1103.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.56% or 0.69 to hit $44.69 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 1.20% or 0.57 to trade at $47.92 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.41% to 1.1272, while USD/JPY rose 0.15% to 120.42.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.40% at 95.76.
