Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Telecoms, Consumer Services and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.20%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.17%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 3.84% or 1.58 points to trade at 42.73 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 3.36% or 5.29 points to end at 162.91 and Travelers Companies (NYSE:TRV) was up 2.83% or 6.64 points to 241.10 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 2.08% or 2.45 points to trade at 115.39 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 1.41% or 1.14 points to end at 79.49 and Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH) shed 0.47% or 2.78 points to 594.10.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which rose 6.06% to 409.87, United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:UAL) which was up 5.96% to settle at 48.75 and Paycom Soft (NYSE:PAYC) which gained 5.75% to close at 163.82.
The worst performers were Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which was down 5.16% to 103.04 in late trade, Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) which lost 3.94% to settle at 343.76 and Bath & Body Works Inc. (NYSE:BBWI) which was down 3.67% to 27.54 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Summit Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:SMMT) which rose 55.99% to 19.14, Aligos Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ALGS) which was up 55.32% to settle at 19.43 and Instil Bio Inc (NASDAQ:TIL) which gained 53.78% to close at 21.99.
The worst performers were Edgio Inc (NASDAQ:EGIO) which was down 80.23% to 1.22 in late trade, Pineapple Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PEGY) which lost 63.81% to settle at 0.29 and Wheeler Real Estate Investment Trust Inc (NASDAQ:WHLR) which was down 35.12% to 6.65 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1756 to 1056 and 93 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1878 rose and 1423 declined, while 133 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 13.09% to 19.45.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.42% or 10.65 to $2,535.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.48% or 1.00 to hit $68.67 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 1.06% or 0.75 to trade at $71.81 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.41% to 1.10, while USD/JPY rose 0.60% to 143.13.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.43% at 101.58.
