Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Financials, Telecoms and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.76%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.04%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.98%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 3.04% or 9.64 points to trade at 326.44 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 2.88% or 1.47 points to end at 52.48 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 2.79% or 5.44 points to 200.34 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which lost 1.41% or 2.28 points to trade at 158.97 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 1.39% or 0.28 points to end at 19.83 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 1.19% or 1.99 points to 165.04.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Kenvue Inc (NYSE:KVUE) which rose 14.68% to 20.86, Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE:UBER) which was up 10.93% to settle at 64.87 and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which gained 7.51% to close at 150.26.
The worst performers were Henry Schein Inc (NASDAQ:HSIC) which was down 8.11% to 63.92 in late trade, Albemarle Corp (NYSE:ALB) which lost 4.78% to settle at 79.53 and Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE:VMC) which was down 4.39% to 246.14 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Biovie Inc (NASDAQ:BIVI) which rose 685.98% to 2.31, VBI Vaccines Inc (NASDAQ:VBIV) which was up 111.29% to settle at 0.13 and Lytus Technologies Holdings Ptv Ltd (NASDAQ:LYT) which gained 54.61% to close at 2.18.
The worst performers were Airnet Technology Inc (NASDAQ:ANTE) which was down 81.46% to 0.44 in late trade, Richtech Robotics Inc (NASDAQ:RR) which lost 73.94% to settle at 0.37 and Elevation Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:ELEV) which was down 63.37% to 0.78 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2121 to 731 and 70 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2186 rose and 1180 declined, while 118 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 28.16% to 27.71.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.63% or 15.50 to $2,428.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.10% or 0.07 to hit $72.87 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.13% or 0.10 to trade at $76.20 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.21% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.40% to 144.74.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.25% at 102.74.
