Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Financials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.58%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.52%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.26%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which rose 1.16% or 0.81 points to trade at 70.46 at the close. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 1.14% or 0.74 points to end at 65.53 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) was up 1.14% or 1.33 points to 118.47 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 0.59% or 0.35 points to trade at 58.65 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 0.33% or 0.31 points to end at 94.90 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 0.11% or 0.12 points to 106.82.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which rose 4.17% to 24.98, Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) which was up 2.62% to settle at 77.48 and Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA) which gained 2.55% to close at 10.26.
The worst performers were Tegna Inc (NYSE:TGNA) which was down 2.20% to 20.4300 in late trade, Gilead Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:GILD) which lost 2.01% to settle at 78.17 and Expedia Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) which was down 1.40% to 109.80 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Macrocure Ltd (NASDAQ:MCUR) which rose 66.12% to 2.0100, SkyPeople Fruit Juice Inc (NASDAQ:SPU) which was up 58.33% to settle at 9.5000 and Neothetics Inc (NASDAQ:NEOT) which gained 28.45% to close at 1.07.
The worst performers were Intercloud (NASDAQ:ICLD) which was down 17.65% to 0.3500 in late trade, Antares Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:ATRS) which lost 16.31% to settle at 1.180 and Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ:CZR) which was down 15.67% to 6.350 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2232 to 942 and 86 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1563 rose and 968 declined, while 94 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.35% to 12.92.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.00% or 0.05 to $1325.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 1.39% or 0.66 to hit $46.98 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 1.46% or 0.73 to trade at $49.42 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.07% to 1.1187, while USD/JPY rose 0.08% to 101.88.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.05% at 95.53.
