Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Utilities, Consumer Services and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.28% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.57%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.62%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN), which rose 3.18% or 6.41 points to trade at 207.86 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 2.20% or 9.20 points to end at 427.99 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) was up 2.02% or 2.63 points to 132.95 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which lost 4.76% or 13.99 points to trade at 280.01 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 2.09% or 1.66 points to end at 77.61 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 1.53% or 2.34 points to 150.76.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which rose 10.11% to 101.16, Constellation Energy Corp (NASDAQ:CEG) which was up 7.15% to settle at 266.73 and JM Smucker Company (NYSE:SJM) which gained 5.73% to close at 120.13.
The worst performers were Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which was down 10.40% to 34.42 in late trade, General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) which lost 8.99% to settle at 54.79 and Align Technology Inc (NASDAQ:ALGN) which was down 5.23% to 227.93 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Psyence Biomedical Ltd (NASDAQ:PBM) which rose 6,872.86% to 3.34, Global Mofy Metaverse Ltd (NASDAQ:GMM) which was up 1,467.69% to settle at 3.59 and Primega Group Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:PGHL) which gained 918.60% to close at 107.36.
The worst performers were Alector Inc (NASDAQ:ALEC) which was down 35.10% to 2.57 in late trade, Above Food Ingredients Inc (NASDAQ:ABVE) which lost 34.28% to settle at 0.54 and Lucas GC Ltd (NASDAQ:LGCL) which was down 32.65% to 0.76 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1765 to 1041 and 91 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1959 fell and 1334 advanced, while 124 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.42% to 14.10.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.59% or 15.59 to $2,658.19 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.35% or 0.24 to hit $68.70 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.36% or 0.26 to trade at $72.22 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.05% to 1.05, while USD/JPY fell 0.76% to 153.04.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.07% at 106.85.
