Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.73% to hit a new 3-month low, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.58%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.96%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 1.05% or 0.29 points to trade at 28.36 at the close. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) added 0.78% or 0.20 points to end at 25.95 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) was up 0.30% or 0.32 points to 105.59 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Company (NYSE:BA), which lost 2.10% or 3.03 points to trade at 141.03 in late trade. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) declined 1.61% or 1.46 points to end at 89.14 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) shed 1.31% or 0.90 points to 68.01.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Allergan Plc (NYSE:AGN) which rose 6.09% to 326.98, Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) which was up 4.40% to settle at 165.57 and Perrigo Co (NYSE:PRGO) which gained 3.81% to close at 193.60.
The worst performers were Mylan Inc (NASDAQ:MYL) which was down 14.51% to 56.37 in late trade, Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which lost 7.49% to settle at 11.37 and Newfield Exploration Company (NYSE:NFX) which was down 5.80% to 30.88 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Nymox Pharmaceutical Corp (NASDAQ:NYMX) which rose 100.00% to 2.540, Magnetek Inc (NASDAQ:MAG) which was up 53.55% to settle at 49.52 and Lilis Energy Inc (NASDAQ:LLEX) which gained 31.11% to close at 1.180.
The worst performers were Bellerophon Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BLPH) which was down 55.69% to 3.39 in late trade, Republic Airways Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:RJET) which lost 55.65% to settle at 3.77 and Ceres Inc (NASDAQ:CERE) which was down 23.46% to 1.240 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2309 to 783 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1972 fell and 821 advanced, while 4 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 13.54% to 15.60.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.54% or 5.90 to $1091.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.09% or 0.04 to hit $47.03 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.09% or 0.05 to trade at $52.91 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.00% to 1.1094, while USD/JPY fell 0.43% to 123.28.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.73% at 96.63.
