Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.46% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.65%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.92%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM), which rose 0.68% or 0.57 points to trade at 84.85 at the close. EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) added 0.49% or 0.34 points to end at 69.41 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 0.44% or 0.21 points to 47.44 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.70% or 0.54 points to trade at 31.30 in late trade. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) declined 1.23% or 2.06 points to end at 165.34 and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) shed 1.15% or 1.17 points to 100.42.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Time Warner Inc (NYSE:TWX) which rose 1.32% to 86.02, Frontier Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:FTR) which was up 1.31% to settle at 5.03 and Sealed Air Corporation (NYSE:SEE) which gained 1.22% to close at 49.11.
The worst performers were Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which was down 6.18% to 102.40 in late trade, Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE:DAL) which lost 5.01% to settle at 40.75 and American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which was down 4.46% to 39.86 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Oculus Innovative Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:OCLS) which rose 30.37% to 1.760, Recro Pharm (NASDAQ:REPH) which was up 20.28% to settle at 11.15 and Pozen Inc (NASDAQ:POZN) which gained 18.94% to close at 8.98.
The worst performers were Allied Motion Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:AMOT) which was down 12.52% to 24.74 in late trade, China Biologic Products Inc (NASDAQ:CBPO) which lost 12.42% to settle at 103.86 and Seanergy Maritime Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:SHIP) which was down 5.97% to 0.574 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2313 to 817 and 4 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1827 fell and 974 advanced, while 6 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.53% to 15.28 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.45% or 5.20 to $1173.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 1.33% or 0.79 to hit $58.34 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.77% or 0.48 to trade at $62.83 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.56% to 1.1287, while USD/JPY fell 0.91% to 124.45.
The US Dollar Index was down 1.21% at 95.22.
