Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.85% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index added 1.83%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.56%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which rose 5.30% or 1.35 points to trade at 26.82 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 5.30% or 3.48 points to end at 69.18 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) was up 4.23% or 1.09 points to 26.85 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 0.75% or 0.94 points to trade at 124.27 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 0.36% or 0.40 points to end at 110.78 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) gained 0.69% or 0.82 points to 119.65.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which rose 10.62% to 17.60, Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA) which was up 9.35% to settle at 10.41 and CONSOL Energy Inc (NYSE:CNX) which gained 9.04% to close at 10.74.
The worst performers were Mallinckrodt (NYSE:MNK) which was down 6.77% to 61.41 in late trade, Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which lost 5.32% to settle at 67.28 and Edwards Lifesciences Corporation (NYSE:EW) which was down 3.35% to 149.37 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Contravir Pharmaceut (NASDAQ:CTRV) which rose 126.07% to 4.77, China Housing & Land Development Inc (NASDAQ:CHLN) which was unchanged 0.00% to settle at 2.480 and Dex Media Inc (NASDAQ:DXM) which gained 56.25% to close at 0.25.
The worst performers were Vringo (NASDAQ:VRNG) which was down 41.10% to 0.321 in late trade, Cadiz Inc (NASDAQ:CDZI) which lost 37.85% to settle at 4.91 and Sientra Inc (NASDAQ:SIEN) which was down 21.12% to 8.18 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2264 to 276 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1977 rose and 561 declined, while 48 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.02% to 19.47 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.12% or 1.40 to $1135.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 1.68% or 0.77 to hit $46.30 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 2.57% or 1.24 to trade at $49.37 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.25% to 1.1183, while USD/JPY rose 0.43% to 120.42.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.19% at 96.22.
