Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Financials, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.77%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.46%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.04%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 1.55% or 1.76 points to trade at 115.21 at the close. EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) added 1.49% or 0.71 points to end at 48.24 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 1.45% or 0.63 points to 44.11 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 2.21% or 1.15 points to trade at 50.98 in late trade. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) declined 1.31% or 0.43 points to end at 32.42 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) shed 0.28% or 0.26 points to 93.13.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) which rose 4.04% to 34.25, CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which was up 3.97% to settle at 62.66 and Owens-Illinois Inc (NYSE:OI) which gained 3.36% to close at 22.15.
The worst performers were Mallinckrodt (NYSE:MNK) which was down 10.02% to 73.87 in late trade, NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which lost 8.79% to settle at 16.40 and Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which was down 5.56% to 297.16 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Wafergen Bi (NASDAQ:WGBS) which rose 90.06% to 3.25, China Auto Logistics Inc (NASDAQ:CALI) which was up 44.79% to settle at 1.080 and Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which gained 37.45% to close at 0.07.
The worst performers were Lilis Energy Inc (NASDAQ:LLEX) which was down 76.83% to 0.730 in late trade, RLJ Entertainment Inc (NASDAQ:RLJE) which lost 63.70% to settle at 0.599 and TigerLogic Corporation (NASDAQ:TIGR) which was down 62.80% to 0.372 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1515 to 1037 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1363 fell and 1188 advanced, while 62 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 9.11% to 20.25 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.45% or 5.10 to $1132.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 3.22% or 1.45 to hit $46.47 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 2.28% or 1.08 to trade at $48.55 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.94% to 1.1193, while USD/JPY rose 0.42% to 120.52.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.71% at 96.04.
