Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Telecoms, Technology and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.08%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.17%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Visa Inc (NYSE:V), which rose 2.57% or 1.82 points to trade at 72.70 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 1.89% or 2.45 points to end at 132.07 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 1.07% or 0.51 points to 48.10 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.26% or 0.37 points to trade at 29.10 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 1.09% or 0.91 points to end at 82.25 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) shed 1.03% or 0.85 points to 81.76.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which rose 6.26% to 83.15, Teradata Corporation (NYSE:TDC) which was up 3.45% to settle at 36.85 and Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) which gained 3.10% to close at 97.91.
The worst performers were Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which was down 12.23% to 18.16 in late trade, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which lost 6.12% to settle at 10.27 and Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which was down 6.11% to 18.89 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Exelixis Inc (NASDAQ:EXEL) which rose 50.38% to 5.88, NF Energy Saving Corporation (NASDAQ:NFEC) which was up 25.62% to settle at 1.520 and PDI Inc (NASDAQ:PDII) which gained 22.45% to close at 2.40.
The worst performers were Xg Technolo (NASDAQ:XGTI) which was down 34.80% to 1.630 in late trade, Axion Power International Inc (NASDAQ:AXPW) which lost 26.13% to settle at 1.640 and Voltari Corp (NASDAQ:VLTC) which was down 23.56% to 7.560 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2081 to 1013; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1920 fell and 887 advanced, while 4 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.51% to 12.25.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.01% or 0.10 to $1096.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.03% or 0.01 to hit $50.26 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.06% or 0.60 to trade at $56.51 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.05% to 1.0826, while USD/JPY rose 0.19% to 124.30.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.01% at 98.18.
