Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.94%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.97%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.80%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), which rose 2.38% or 2.27 points to trade at 97.51 at the close. Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 2.08% or 1.40 points to end at 68.80 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 1.97% or 1.47 points to 76.10 in late trade.
Biggest losers included McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which added 0.04% or 0.05 points to trade at 127.61 in late trade. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) added 0.07% or 0.02 points to end at 27.64 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) gained 0.09% or 0.07 points to 82.83.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which rose 34.44% to 6.05, Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which was up 15.44% to settle at 10.54 and Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) which gained 12.52% to close at 13.12.
The worst performers were Juniper Networks Inc (NYSE:JNPR) which was down 7.35% to 23.06 in late trade, Mallinckrodt (NYSE:MNK) which lost 4.54% to settle at 58.40 and Fastenal Company (NASDAQ:FAST) which was down 3.41% to 45.34 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Linn Energy LLC (NASDAQ:LINE) which rose 48.84% to 0.48, Linn Co LLC (NASDAQ:LNCO) which was up 44.62% to settle at 0.5030 and Warren Resources Inc (NASDAQ:WRES) which gained 37.86% to close at 0.1930.
The worst performers were Horizon Pharma PLC (NASDAQ:HZNP) which was down 26.34% to 13.42 in late trade, Nephrogenex (NASDAQ:NRX) which lost 24.79% to settle at 0.3423 and Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc (NASDAQ:EGLE) which was down 23.16% to 0.700 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2626 to 705 and 34 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1728 rose and 868 declined, while 58 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.69% to 15.01.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 0.09% or 1.10 to $1256.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 4.48% or 1.81 to hit $42.17 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 4.20% or 1.80 to trade at $44.63 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.18% to 1.1387, while USD/JPY rose 0.55% to 108.53.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.04% at 94.01.
