Investing.com – India equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Consumer Durables, Power and Banking sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 lost 0.26%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index fell 0.19%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Nifty 50 were UltraTech Cement Ltd (NS:ULTC), which rose 2.15% or 81.45 points to trade at 3889.10 at the close. Bajaj Auto Ltd (NS:BAJA) added 1.46% or 41.70 points to end at 2914.70 and UPL Ltd (NS:UPLL) was up 1.16% or 9.95 points to 869.30 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Bharti Infratel Ltd (NS:BHRI), which lost 3.73% or 11.50 points to trade at 296.75 in late trade. Wipro Ltd (NS:WIPR) declined 3.28% or 12.70 points to end at 374.40 and Vedanta Ltd (NS:VDAN) shed 3.30% or 5.60 points to 164.65.
The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Bharti Airtel Ltd (BO:BRTI) which rose 2.43% to 323.00, Bajaj Auto Ltd (BO:BAJA) which was up 2.09% to settle at 2912.25 and Larsen & Toubro Ltd (BO:LART) which gained 1.49% to close at 1282.95.
The worst performers were Tata Motors Ltd DVR (BO:TAMdv) which was down 3.03% to 88.00 in late trade, Tata Motors Ltd (BO:TAMO) which lost 3.01% to settle at 177.20 and Vedanta Ltd (BO:VDAN) which was down 2.92% to 164.65 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 848 to 725 and 57 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1322 fell and 1120 advanced, while 158 ended unchanged on the India National Stock Exchange.
The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 10.41% to 18.8975 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.01% or 0.15 to $1328.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 1.26% or 0.70 to hit $56.20 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.78% or 0.51 to trade at $65.87 a barrel.
USD/INR was up 0.24% to 71.185, while EUR/INR rose 0.29% to 81.1415.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.06% at 95.808.
