Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Healthcare, IT and Real Estate sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 1.60% to hit a new 52-week low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG), which rose 10.55% or 1.05 points to trade at 11.00 at the close. Eldorado Gold Corp (TO:ELD) added 10.26% or 0.08 points to end at 0.86 and Yamana Gold Inc (TO:YRI) was up 8.80% or 0.25 points to 3.09 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd (TO:TVE), which lost 10.41% or 0.230 points to trade at 1.980 in late trade. Shopify Inc (TO:SHOP) declined 7.39% or 13.860 points to end at 173.800 and Cascades Inc . (TO:CAS) shed 7.20% or 0.88 points to 11.34.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 934 to 221 and 106 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.94% to 21.51 a new 6-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.69% or 8.60 to $1250.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 3.92% or 2.02 to hit $49.45 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 2.55% or 1.54 to trade at $58.74 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.23% to 0.7454, while CAD/EUR fell 0.58% to 0.6570.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.31% at 96.607.
