Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the IT, Clean Technology and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.95%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Cascades Inc . (TSX:CAS), which rose 8.24% or 1.14 points to trade at 14.98 at the close. Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP (TSX:BEP_u) added 6.84% or 4.15 points to end at 64.80 and Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP) was up 6.09% or 73.86 points to 1286.82 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:FR), which lost 6.87% or 0.94 points to trade at 12.74 in late trade. Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX:VET) declined 6.73% or 0.23 points to end at 3.19 and Seven Generations Energy Ltd (TSX:VII) shed 5.08% or 0.20 points to 3.74.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 562 to 501 and 108 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.65% or 12.25 to $1864.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.47% or 0.19 to hit $40.12 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.21% or 0.09 to trade at $41.85 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.16% to 0.7470, while CAD/EUR rose 0.25% to 0.6424.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.26% at 94.642.
