Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Materials, IT and Energy sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.60%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX:NG), which rose 9.24% or 0.46 points to trade at 5.44 at the close. SSR Mining Inc (TSX:SSRM) added 7.66% or 0.82 points to end at 11.52 and Equinox Gold Corp (TSX:EQX) was up 7.08% or 0.60 points to 9.07 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC), which lost 9.07% or 1.07 points to trade at 10.73 in late trade. Parex Resources Inc (TSX:PXT) declined 7.60% or 1.09 points to end at 13.25 and Bombardier Inc (TSX:BBDb) shed 2.96% or 3.09 points to 101.41.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 569 to 367 and 102 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.86% to 9.40.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.26% or 34.34 to $2,752.74 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 2.48% or 1.70 to hit $70.29 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 1.88% or 1.36 to trade at $73.55 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.16% to 0.71, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.46% to 0.67.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.25% at 106.34.
