Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Materials, Energy and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.39%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Osisko Mining Corp (TSX:OSK), which rose 62.93% or 1.85 points to trade at 4.79 at the close. IAMGold Corporation (TSX:IMG) added 10.75% or 0.63 points to end at 6.49 and Barrick Gold Corporation (TSX:ABX) was up 9.37% or 2.24 points to 26.15 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Mattr Corp (TSX:MATR), which lost 8.45% or 1.36 points to trade at 14.74 in late trade. Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) declined 5.99% or 0.16 points to end at 2.51 and Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp (TSX:AQN) shed 4.72% or 0.35 points to 7.07.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 529 to 399 and 99 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 9.94% to 14.22.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.58% or 39.00 to $2,512.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 3.64% or 2.80 to hit $79.64 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 2.81% or 2.24 to trade at $81.90 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.07% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.16% to 0.67.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.03% at 102.99.
