Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Energy, Consumer Staples and IT sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.36%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were International Petroleum Corp (TSX:IPCO), which rose 6.52% or 1.18 points to trade at 19.28 at the close. Denison Mines Corp (TSX:DML) added 5.11% or 0.14 points to end at 2.88 and Onex Corp (TSX:ONEX) was up 4.63% or 4.31 points to 97.33 in late trade.
Biggest losers included NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX:NG), which lost 4.59% or 0.22 points to trade at 4.57 in late trade. Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) declined 3.88% or 0.12 points to end at 2.97 and Kinross Gold Corporation (TSX:K) shed 3.78% or 0.43 points to 10.96.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 509 to 434 and 104 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.45% to 7.95.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.02% or 0.45 to $2,338.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.06% or 0.05 to hit $83.33 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.14% or 0.12 to trade at $86.72 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.44% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.37% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.21% at 105.37.
