Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Materials, Industrials and Energy sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were CES Energy Solutions Corp (TO:CEU), which rose 5.97% or 0.310 points to trade at 5.500 at the close. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) added 4.96% or 1.04 points to end at 22.00 and West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd . (TO:WFT) was up 4.80% or 4.35 points to 94.98 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Linamar Corporation (TO:LNR), which lost 5.90% or 4.43 points to trade at 70.63 in late trade. ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI) declined 5.33% or 0.040 points to end at 0.710 and Cogeco Communications Inc (TO:CCA) shed 4.17% or 3.06 points to 70.24.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 661 to 464 and 114 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.64% to 12.52.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.01% or 0.10 to $1290.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.35% or 0.25 to hit $71.56 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 1.05% or 0.82 to trade at $79.25 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.67% to 0.7818, while CAD/EUR rose 0.90% to 0.6620.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.12% at 93.25.
