Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy, Financials and Mining sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.03% to hit a new 3-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR), which rose 8.66% or 0.38 points to trade at 4.77 at the close. Canadian Western Bank (TO:CWB) added 8.53% or 2.93 points to end at 37.28 and Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) was up 6.25% or 0.33 points to 5.61 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Dollarama Inc (TO:DOL), which lost 6.68% or 10.45 points to trade at 146.03 in late trade. Aphria Inc (TO:APH) declined 6.17% or 0.790 points to end at 12.020 and NexGen Energy Ltd. (TO:NXE) shed 4.36% or 0.130 points to 2.850.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 543 to 531 and 136 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.92% to 12.74.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.04% or 0.50 to $1300.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.79% or 1.16 to hit $65.89 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 2.59% or 1.95 to trade at $77.31 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.27% to 0.7705, while CAD/EUR fell 0.46% to 0.6530.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.20% at 93.42.
