Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.13%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.06%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.12%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 2.07% or 2.49 points to trade at 122.74 at the close. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) added 1.15% or 0.79 points to end at 69.75 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 0.87% or 1.89 points to 218.40 in late trade.
Biggest losers included EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which lost 2.13% or 1.49 points to trade at 68.50 in late trade. Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) declined 0.87% or 1.27 points to end at 144.43 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) shed 0.82% or 0.66 points to 79.79.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) which rose 3.71% to 87.88, Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was up 3.66% to settle at 20.11 and Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:ATI) which gained 3.22% to close at 32.38.
The worst performers were ADT Corporation (NYSE:ADT) which was down 4.90% to 35.11 in late trade, Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which lost 3.25% to settle at 88.62 and Williams Companies Inc (NYSE:WMB) which was down 3.15% to 58.94 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Dex Media Inc (NASDAQ:DXM) which rose 33.10% to 1.13, Energous Co (NASDAQ:WATT) which was up 29.81% to settle at 9.58 and Speed Commerce Inc (NASDAQ:SPDC) which gained 21.45% to close at 0.354.
The worst performers were Vical Incorporated (NASDAQ:VICL) which was down 43.63% to 0.800 in late trade, MELA Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:MELA) which lost 23.56% to settle at 1.33 and Amedica Cor (NASDAQ:AMDA) which was down 18.57% to 0.570 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1763 to 1369 and 4 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1557 rose and 1243 declined, while 6 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.63% to 12.15.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.53% or 6.30 to $1177.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.33% or 0.81 to hit $61.19 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 1.99% or 1.26 to trade at $64.60 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 1.49% to 1.1172, while USD/JPY rose 0.43% to 123.92.
The US Dollar Index was up 1.15% at 95.61.
