Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Utilities, Healthcare and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.58%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.61%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.32%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 0.75% or 0.74 points to trade at 99.36 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 0.22% or 0.37 points to end at 166.50 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) was up 0.19% or 0.22 points to 118.90 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), which lost 1.59% or 1.68 points to trade at 104.24 in late trade. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) declined 1.43% or 0.50 points to end at 34.55 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) shed 1.32% or 0.38 points to 28.03.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) which rose 3.27% to 62.56, Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which was up 3.10% to settle at 438.17 and Range Resources Corporation (NYSE:RRC) which gained 2.69% to close at 49.66.
The worst performers were Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc (NYSE:DO) which was down 4.66% to 26.50 in late trade, ONEOK Inc (NYSE:OKE) which lost 3.35% to settle at 46.99 and Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which was down 3.20% to 14.83 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Oramed Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ORMP) which rose 68.32% to 7.81, Recon Technology Ltd (NASDAQ:RCON) which was up 50.62% to settle at 2.410 and Joes Jeans Inc (NASDAQ:JOEZ) which gained 49.97% to close at 0.217.
The worst performers were Sonus Networks Inc (NASDAQ:SONS) which was down 33.55% to 8.74 in late trade, China Finance Online Co Limited (NASDAQ:JRJC) which lost 26.01% to settle at 4.580 and IRSA Propiedades Comerciales SA (NASDAQ:IRCP) which was down 23.17% to 37.500 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1738 to 1068; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1486 fell and 1276 advanced, while 9 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.64% to 13.63.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 0.41% or 4.90 to $1192.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.13% or 0.06 to hit $47.39 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 1.34% or 0.75 to trade at $55.17 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.24% to 1.0919, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 119.72.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.24% at 97.43.
