Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Industrials and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.86% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.61%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.90%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Visa Inc (NYSE:V), which rose 2.57% or 6.98 points to trade at 278.29 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 2.44% or 0.81 points to end at 34.06 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) was up 2.30% or 0.68 points to 30.19 in late trade.
Biggest losers included International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which lost 0.90% or 1.46 points to trade at 160.48 in late trade. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) declined 0.73% or 0.78 points to end at 105.90 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) shed 0.56% or 0.50 points to 88.04.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were GameStop Corp (NYSE:GME) which rose 4.60% to 38.67, CBS Corporation (NYSE:CBS) which was up 4.48% to settle at 61.75 and Avon Products Inc (NYSE:AVP) which gained 4.11% to close at 8.86.
The worst performers were Navient Cor (NASDAQ:NAVI) which was down 8.83% to 19.51 in late trade, Genworth Financial Inc (NYSE:GNW) which lost 5.42% to settle at 7.33 and Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which was down 4.90% to 58.67 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Oncolytics Biotech Inc (NASDAQ:ONCY) which rose 46.88% to 1.070, Methes Energies International Ltd (NASDAQ:MEIL) which was up 31.24% to settle at 1.680 and TRACON Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:TCON) which gained 29.71% to close at 17.42.
The worst performers were Pacira Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:PCRX) which was down 19.58% to 92.30 in late trade, Vestin Realty Mortgage II Inc (NASDAQ:VRTB) which lost 16.03% to settle at 3.300 and Bonso Electronics International Inc (NASDAQ:BNSO) which was down 9.79% to 1.290 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1777 to 1048 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1851 rose and 945 declined, while 8 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.40% to 13.02 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 0.59% or 7.20 to $1205.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in April fell 0.06% or 0.03 to hit $49.73 a barrel, while the April Brent Oil contract fell 4.31% or 2.69 to trade at $59.88 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.13% to 1.1180, while USD/JPY rose 0.48% to 120.16.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.24% at 95.52.
