Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Materials, Energy and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.30%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG), which rose 10.46% or 1.40 points to trade at 14.79 at the close. Semafo Inc . (TO:SMF) added 9.85% or 0.54 points to end at 6.02 and Alamos Gold Inc (TO:AGI) was up 9.34% or 0.97 points to 11.35 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Just Energy Group Inc . (TO:JE), which lost 2.11% or 0.15 points to trade at 6.97 in late trade. Alacer Gold Corp (TO:ASR) declined 1.87% or 0.070 points to end at 3.670 and Colliers International Group (TO:CIG) shed 1.82% or 1.00 points to 54.09.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 819 to 342 and 116 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 9.85% to 14.27.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 1.44% or 18.95 to $1337.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 3.47% or 1.53 to hit $45.58 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 2.55% or 1.17 to trade at $47.05 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.59% to 0.7631, while CAD/EUR rose 0.40% to 0.6826.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.47% at 95.52.
