Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Energy, Mining and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.50%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pengrowth Energy Corporation (TO:PGF), which rose 9.68% or 0.30 points to trade at 3.40 at the close. Canaccord Financial Inc (TO:CF) added 7.60% or 0.56 points to end at 7.93 and Bankers Petroleum Ltd. (TO:BNK) was up 5.57% or 0.160 points to 3.030 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Osisko Gold Ro (TO:OR), which lost 5.51% or 0.98 points to trade at 16.82 in late trade. Colliers International Group (TO:CIG) declined 4.26% or 2.18 points to end at 49.00 and Alamos Gold Inc. (TO:AGI) shed 3.84% or 0.30 points to 7.52.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 739 to 668 and 190 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 7.69% to 14.64.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.18% or 2.10 to $1175.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 3.12% or 1.81 to hit $59.95 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 3.14% or 1.97 to trade at $64.66 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.62% to 0.8108, while CAD/EUR rose 0.71% to 0.7187.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.05% at 95.17.
